Dexter: TV series about a serial killer

I don't know if anyone has seen this in the class, but I just finished season 4 of the show and was amazed at how well done the show was. Without a doubt it is my favorite TV show out there. The plot and storyline are extremely well done. The way the producers give you information that some characters are not aware is unbelievable. Also, in the show we live in the head of a serial killer and are aware of what he is thinking. The plot unfolds itself perfectly and every single thing makes sense and is connected. Lastly, by the use of flashbacks and different distorted or unfocused images the significance of the past unravels smoothly informing us of events happening in the present.

  1. I'm really happy that you posted this, Jake, as it's probably my favorite TV show as well... It was also the cover story of Script Writer Magazine this past summer, which called it the best written show on television. I couldn't agree with you more that the production value surpasses pretty much anything else you'll see on TV... Plus, it has the award-winning performances by Michael C. Hall and John Lithgow (in season 4) to back it up. A few years ago it also won an Emmy for best single-camera editing. I'm consistently impressed with the way the show keeps you in suspense but provides just enough foreshadowing to keep you interested...
If anyone wants to look into the show, but doesn't feel like getting DVDs, you can locate it here... and it's completely legal, of course (sarcasm)

  3. The only other television drama I've seen with comparable production value is Mad Men, and I suppose The Sopranos... All of these shows are far better than the majority of wide-release films, and they have entire seasons to draw out deep and interesting plot lines... I'd definitely recommend checking them out.

  4. thanks for the link john. i've been meaning to watch it and just haven't been able to get dvds or good sites.
this has to be by far one of the most interesting plot-lines. the main character is what drew me in the most. hes a serial killer with morals so despite his horrid habit, you still cant decide whether to condone his actions or not. no other show, ive seen at least, has mixed such contradictory elements which adds to the appeal of dexter.

  6. Having seen a little of Dexter it is interesting comparing and contrasting it with my personal favorite, The Wire. Both seem to take full advantage of the medium, really long and intricate storylines and very well developed characters (as opposed to shows like Law & Order, or CSI). However, at least stylistically they seem quite different, and reflect some differing trends in film and tv. Dexter, it seems is very stylized, it has flashbacks and visually striking shots: close-ups and interesting lighting effects. It fits in with techniques most strikingly seen in TV shows such as the Sopranos, very realistic and gritty shows with dramatic devices and effects thrown in. On the other hand you have a show like The Wire which tries to represent a slice of life. Almost all filming is on location and many of the actors actually come from the poor neighborhoods of Baltimore where the show is set. Beyond that, the filming is documentary style, mainly with hand held cameras and no music or dramatic effects whatsoever, save for atmospheric sound. It represents the kind of realism seen in movies like Saving Private Ryan, gritty and authentic, with little done to embellish the action. Both it seem represent different takes on the realism that dominates film and tv now.
